During
my childhood I used to make regular visits to my grandparents' house
who used to live in a village called Cwmbach, Powys, Wales, usually
on a Sunday.
I
was fascinated by the view from one of their bedroom windows,
so I asked my father to take a photograph of it as he enjoys photography.
From
this tiny black and white photograph (kept since the 1960s),
and some more recent photographs taken by myself, I have created
the scene before you.
It
often featured Stanier 8F steam freight locomotives as we have here,
pulling coal wagons or some time passenger trains on the line to
and from Shrewsbury, up and down to Builth Road Station and beyond,
until they were all taken out of service by 1968.
I
often used to wave to the engine driver if I was sitting with my
family on the roadside bench.
There was a bench hidden from view behind the garden fence.
The
road is the main trunk, the A470 going under the viaduct down to
Builth Wells.
The building before you is the village shop owned by Mrs Morgan.
Terry
Mason stands at the gate entrance.
In the foreground can be seen my grandparents garden.
Local
farmer John Hamer prepares to open his farm gates
and drive his tractor across the road to his field opposite.
